I want to make one of these for my Dad, I've bought the tin and bought a heating core, but I have only found one definitive recipe for it online with no reviews and it is making me nervous!
Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe?? Any advice would be very much appreciated!!

Post the recipe and let us have a look. Sure we'll be able to work out what it's likely to be like.

Just seems a bit plain... Could I add a dash of vanilla essence to it? (and how much is a dash in such a big cake?!)I love surprises!0 -
That's just a basic plain sponge cake. You can add lots of things to it to liven it up - some vanilla extract (I don't like essence, you also need loads more it it than you do extract), lemon or orange juice.
If you keep it plain you could split it and fill will jam and cream or buttercream and then sift some icing sugar over the top.
If you lemon or orange juice, you could put some buttercream in the middle and then ice with lemon/orange icing.

Thanks Fliss - I'm glad it looks ok as a base! I might make it plain and see if it needs something extra - jam and buttercream is my planned filling!I love surprises!0

I made a 12 inch cake for a friend's wedding, never bothered with a heating core (whatever that actually is). I used the three tier recipe from BBCgoodfood website, they have three different cakes, one chocolate, one lemon and one fruit. http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/4577/wedding-cake-rich-dark-chocolate-cake for the choc one (very nice and came out well, cost a fair bit for ingredients but there was a LOT of it!)June Grocery Challenge £493.33/£500 July £/£500

I'm glad it turned out well - didn't know what a heating core was, had to look it up
and underneath your link is a recipe to turn it into a chocolate too
