I think you have the right reference but the question asks for how many were deleted.. Not how many are still missing.

So maybe the answer is 253?

I would say the answer is 106, as the article says:-

"There are 27 incomplete Doctor Who serials, with 106 of 253 episodes from the first six years of the programme missing. "

The wiki article also says 3 unaired episodes are missing - making it 109.
But the question specifically asks for deleted during the 1970s where as the article says the 109 are missing from both the 60s and the 70s.

    I would agree with jrandrews72.

The term missing just means they were deleted at the time.

there may be 106/108/109 still missing (depending on source) but that is because many have been 'found' in different formats/countries.
Wiki also states Eventually every single master videotape of the programme's first 253 episodes (1963–69) was destroyed or wiped, with the final 1960s mastertapes to be erased being those for the 1968 serial Fury from the Deep, which were authorised for wiping in late 1974.[7]

Perhaps more of an issue is how many were in the 1970s as some were before 1970 and some after :D (as per databasic second comment). I would assume they just mean that era and so go for the full 253 episodes

The question has now been clarified and adjusted to:
