Denied a mortgage - No Electoral registration

Hi everyone,
My partner and I were recently denied a mortgage on the grounds that we have not been on the electoral register for over 10 years and have no credit history.
Our jobs have required a huge amount of travel over the past ten years so we have not had permanent addresses and therefore didn't register. We have always stayed away from any kind of debt and this has obviously caused a problem.
My questions are:
If I register on the electoral role from an address that is not my own say for instance, my mother's address - is this legal?

Also would this affect my mother's benefits? I am hardly there so I wouldn't want to get her into trouble or affect her payments/allowances just because I need to register in order to get a mortgage.

Very disappointing that although we have saved a large deposit we are denied a mortgage at this point. Now just uncertain of the next steps to take.

Many thanks Zipp

  • You don't say what job you do, but personally I served in the Army and had a postal vote/proxy at my parents address whilst serving away. Maybe you could do the same, contact your local council and ask. If you don't live there and can provide evidence of where you do live then there should not be a problem using your mother's address.

Good credit history is a must, have a credit card by all means but make sure you pay it off in full every month. No credit history can be almost as bad as a bad one.

This should not necessarily be a show stopper, but I assume you have a bank account that has been registered somewhere.

If this is Mum's, then it should provide you options with/without being on the Voters Roll.

    Good luck

  • When we lived in Spain, I had a non-resident proxy vote registered, at my address where I last lived, we still owned the house and our son lived there while we were in Spain.

I would ask Electoral Registration at you mother's Council the best way to do it and if what you propose is legal.

Although why not just register where you live at the time? Only takes a few minutes!

This has been part of our problem. My partner works in films/movies.I'm a self employed musician.

When he is working on location, we stay in hotels or rented apartments paid for by film companies.

This year we have been house sitting for his mother who travels for long periods (6 months away) this year.
This arrangement has worked great for us while we saved a deposit to put down. However I realise now that we appear pretty transient on paper.

Main thing is, I don't want to incriminate my mother who lives alone by registering on the electoral vote when I am hardly ever there. I don't think my partner's mother wants me to register as living there either for similar reasons!

I have no permanent address as I'm either house sitting for my partner's mother or travelling. Not the kind of situation that works in a society such as ours. I guess I'm on the margins by nature of being such a nomad.

I think being in the army is slightly different as it's more of an official position and understandably, such an occupation requires one being out of permanent residential positions.

Will do some more research but if anyone has been in a similar situation/knows the solution please do get in touch.

    Many Thanks Zipp

Where have you had your bank account statements delivered to, or registered at if you online bank?
