In my experience I would say around 1000 entries to 1 win

Mine is probably 1 win for every 500 comps I enter - but when you do not win for a while it seems like a whole lot more!!!!

Something requiring no skill is harder to win than something with a skill element attached

There is no simple formula. Big prizes like plasma tvs, luxury holidays etc attract far more entries and therefore are harder to win. I enter a huge mix of competitions: online, postcard, text and entry form. I have a preference for breakers as they attract less entries and are more fun.

It has to be a hobby though not a numbers game. Most compers go through 'dry spells' where they enter a lot and win nothing. It would be so disheartening if you were just in for financial gain. I enjoy the banter on the board and the anticipation of a prize as rewarding as the prizes.

well I'm having a very flat time at work at the mo, and trying to think of something lucrative to do with my time at work ( as I get to internet all day) i cant get y head around matched betting so Ive started comping to while away the time

I must have entered about 2000 over the last couple of days so maybe there will be a little reward somewhere out there for me :)

Last time I went "hell 4 leather" was when i was ill and managed to do only a couple fo days and won a cd, a picknic rucks sac and joy of joys! a roll of tin foil. Certainly made me smile coming through the door whatever it is! :D

Plus some comps are open longer than others draws in aug, sept, oct etc etc so it will be months before you hear back from them wins, the longer the draw and the bigger the prize the more entrys they get, so less chance of winning

I would say the wins are about 1 in every 1000 comps. I don't know if it can be enough as a second income though.
