Transfer of equity to ex partner

Am new on here so hope I have posted in correct place!
I am looking to buy my ex out and wanted some advice regarding how I go about doing this. I will keep the background brief, but here goes....
We split 7 years ago, have two children, I have paid the mortgage on my own for the last 7 years. I have only ever been able to work part time as son has behaviour problems, but last October went full time, so am now in the position to take on a bigger mortgage (though it will still be a small mortgage).
One question I have is am I being unreasonable to ex by offering half of equity on what the house was worth 7 years ago, I don't think I am personally as I've paid it since then (before then payments were made jointly as I've always had to work) Obviously it has nearly doubled in those 7 years but I have nothing in writing. The building society have on record that we split and I make the payments from my bank account.
I asked him 3 months ago to come back to me with a reasonable offer and to keep it amicable etc but he keeps saying he hasn't had time to think about it, I really want to move on now with my life, I have spoken with building society and they have worked out what I can afford etc, so am hanging on him at present to come back with offer. Should I now get in contact with a solictor to get the ball rolling.
Any advice appreciated.
