@jack900: opening a joint bank account and managing household expenses like that is a very clean approach, in my opinion (I've been through this). You'll be linked financially anyway with the joint mortgage :-)

You set all direct debits for the household (mortgage, insurance, utilities etc) to come out of the joint account and you can also set a groceries budget. Keep your individual accounts for disposable income, your personal spending, things like that.

I can certainly see the benefits in it being a clean way to seperate shared expenses - my concern is whether to create the account just before a mortgage application. I presume the lender will look at joint account statements (or lack thereof) and see no transaction history to confirm our proof of income or affordability status.

We bought before we were married ( although not really sure why marital status is relevant). My partner paid the mortgage out of his account and I paid the same amount per month into a joint account ( we did this with our rent before we bought) which covered bills and joint savings for holidays, gifts etc.

We didn't switch to a truly 'joined' account until I went on mat leave and couldn't contribute half of the expenses any more.
