Dummy quotes

Options
Advice is often given here that someone should try getting dummy quotes in order to assess the impact of possible changes in circumstances, disclosures, etc.

But any comparative site I have found won't let you do anonymous quotes - they want a name and address. Do people give fictitious addresses?
Doesn't that mean someone at a real address will keep getting pestered about insurance, and suspect that their address is being used for an insurance scam?

Or do you give your real details? Don't insurers get suspicious if you keep trying different occupations, or levels of disclosure?

People that do dummy quotes tend to use a nearby address.

yes. indeed, someone posted just this week that they had suffered a range of quotes and contacts coming through that were nothing to do with them.

A number of the providers have anti-fraud measures in their software which picks up changes to certain facts and playing around with some would result in the premium going up or even a rejection.

  • There seems to have been a recent spate of people posting on here saying they are getting insurance quotations through the post for people who have never lived at their address.

That's horrible. I use dummy quotes but by that I mean that I don't give my real telephone number, everything else is real.
I wasn't aware that making quotes on the same address could make your premium go high. I have done and doing a lot of quotes recently as my insurance is due.

And all those changes you made get logged. Thats been picked up before.

Insurer picked up on some detail that doesnt match records or previous quotes.

I make up an address. Local street only goes up to 100, I put down 102. Easy peasy. Email address is always bob@bob.com
  • Admiral threatened to cancel a friend's policy after a 'review' flagged up that in different quotes he had entered different license types (EU and UK). They were very agressive and quite cheeky with him until I stepped in to explain that he had simply checked what the difference would be when he got his UK license (which was due to happen within the policy year he was setting up).

They had been so unpleasant about it that I insisted (on his behalf) on registering a complaint. He got a letter of apology and £50.
