Do local concils provide shreddign services?

Has anyone ever heard of a local council providing a shredding service? That is, shredding documents containing sensitive personal data.

I haven't. and wouldn't have thought so; there are commercial firms who deal with sensitive data, are set up to do so and can guarantee that discretion and data protection which the council couldn't. If it's a small enough quantity you should be able to do it yourself, if it isn't it's a commercial matter.

I've never heard of such a thing. Shredders can be bought quite cheap in stationery stores these days,
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

What about hiring someone you trust (who has a shredder) to provide you with such a service, or borrow a shredder from someone and do it yourself if it is a one-off job or you don't have a trusty volunteer?. Depends on size of task too I guess...

If it was a really big job I'm sure there are data information handling/paper archiving specialists who can do a one-off confidential paper based data destruction service for a price.

Other ways (on a more smaller scale) we have disposed of sensitive information is to tear it up and compost it (shredded paper is great when mixed with lawn clippings/tea bags in a composting mix). Some people swear by adding some to a bonfire. These might not be appropriate if you can't burn stuff/don't have a garden, 'mind!
