Employment law

Hi everyone,
I am always looking on this board as employment law really interests me.
I am a manager and often have to deal with staff issues and I like to think the information on these boards has helped me when holding disciplinary investigations and meetings, mainly from seeing where people have got things wrong and learning from there mistakes.
The company I work for pay a company to deal with things for us but I don't feel they are a great help, they send us a template letter whenever we need to do anything with staff and we fill it in and send it. They are on the end of the phone when we need them but it always feels we are an inconvenience calling them.

Anyway as I said I have an interest in employment law and personally would like to learn a lot more so I can confidently make decisions on employment matters.
Can anyone recommend a course to go on where I can learn all aspects to effectively manage the type of situations I may have to deal with.
I don't know if an employment law course would be best or maybe human resources.
Any help or personal experience appreciated.

The trouble with employment law is that it keeps changing: what your company is paying the other company for is to make sure that your actions comply with the current law, not whatever the law said last time anyone went on a course ...

Which means that confidently making decisions on employment matters requires you either to keep completely up to date with the law, or to take proper advice.

However: nothing wrong with understanding how the law works now, and the implications of not getting it right.

You could do worse than look at what ACAS offer. If you're in a union, they may offer similar. Or talk to your company's HR dept?

The CIPD offer various employment law qualifications including, for example, http://www.cipd.co.uk/cipd-training/employment-law-foundation-award

I did this course as part of my law degree. As others have said the law is constantly changing in respect of employment but it will give you some grounding and skills to keep on top of the changes if you wanted to learn yourself. x
