Tube travel in London

I shall be going to Wimbledon this year staying at a hotel in Kensington for 2 nights. I would like to know what is the best ticket to buy...Oyster or Travelcard or pay for single journeys. I shall be arriving at Euston on the first day, travelling to Kensington and the next day going to Wimbledon and returning to hotel. On the final day I shall be travelling back to Euston. Thanks for your help

You can buy your train ticket to Euston and include a London travelcard (which you can use on buses as well as the Tube) on that - the station staff can advise.

From personal experience, however, I'd strongly recommend NOT buying the single journey tickets as you go. The prices very quickly stack up that way.

    Enjoy your trip. x

I've been to London many times and travelled by tube. I certainly wouldn't recommend paying for single trips. It's a pain first and foremost and will work out more expensive without doubt.

Travelcards can either be bought as a day pass or a 7 day pass so you will end up buying one a day that way.

On that basis I would personally go for an Oyster card as you would never pay more than the cost of a daily travelcard anyway and chances are it will be a touch cheaper overall...

I already have my train ticket to London which I got using my RSH vouchers so it cost me very little ! I think a visitor Oyster card may be the best idea...its just hard to estimate how much to put on it initiallly Thanks

Be careful when getting off with an Oyster at Southfields- it is often rammed and they often just open the gates during Wimbledon so very easy to get hit by the maximum cost as a penalty for forgetting (or being shuffled along in a large crowd not able to) touching in or out.

Thanks very much for this advice. I will make sure I touch in and out. If I do get shuffled along would it be an idea to find an employee before I leave the station to explain what has happened ?

A visitor Oyster card is not a good idea - it costs £3 which you don't get back

A normal Oyster card is £5 - but you get it and any unused money back if you hand it in at the end of your trip

If you will visit London again, just keep the Oyster card for a future trip.

I live 200 miles from London, but I even have auto top-up enabled so I never have to faff about with topping up when I next visit.

They cannot resolve the journey, if you cannot go back to touch out, you could resolve it by contacting the Oyster help desk (wait approx 24 hours before calling them though), who will arrange a refund of the difference in fares.

It's also worth registering your Oyster card online, you can keep track of your journey history, your balance, and also set the default station for refunds (which I have set to King's Cross - as this is the station at which I arrive by train).
