Nearly all of our furniture is 2nd hand too, whether given to us, left behind in our current house or bought on e---bay or from charity shops. We have a couple of shelving units and a TV cabinet bought new from a certain Swedish store with wedding gift vouchers and apart from mattresses that's it. We have bought new white goods when needed urgently but have bought 2nd hand in the past and would do so again. We are still using a cracked but working lawn mower left behind in our shed and will use it until its had it.
When I bought my flat I had nothing other than a bed, not even a chair but several people donated odds and ends and I got the rest gradually 2nd hand. I was lucky to have kitchen bits, towels etc as I had been stocking a "bottom drawer" a few years before for a failed relationship. I remember winning £10 on the lottery and being ecstatic that I could buy something new for my flat. I bought a little lamp that I still have by my bed now.
Gosh I had better stop rambling and get back to my chores, they won't do themselves!0 -
sq nearly everything in my house is second hand
i like the quirkiness of being odd, but we also prefer recycling.
Feeling productive today have three loaves ready to go in the oven and macaroni all ready to go in the oven.
Just scared the kids off singing "i'm coming undone!!!!" by korn, cue swift exit lol0 -
Thanks SQ for your comments. My day improved no end on Wednesday when some lovely neighbours (3 different lots) stopped me in the village. I got home 2 hours later after tea and cake with a marrow and a bag of plums. Little acts of kindness really can make a difference, even a smile.
And DH's project launch went brilliantly so we had a meal out last night to celebrate...and today I have found a new job so no threat of redundancy any more.
A few logistics to be sorted out but I am looking forward to a more relaxed weekend.
I hope you all have a great weekend too. I'll pop in if I can.Spend less now, work less later.0 -

Sounds like you had a lovely break Kezlou, Im glad it went well as you really deserve it.
If I look out of my window I can see 4 rolls of wallpaer, an ironing board and an ornate white metal bedframe. Round the corner in the alley are 2 perfectly good firesurrounds the plaster type ones) and a corner display cabinet .... am going to get details of freecycle put in the local newsletter and the address for mustard tree. It makes my blood boil, if I had room I would gather them all up and put them on freecycle myself!Clearing the junk to travel light
Saving every single penny.
I will get my caravan0 -
I'm with everyone who pounces on other people's throw-outs and makes them over. I am about, (in the next month or two) to paint an ancient pine dresser that has certainly seen better days but is structurally sound. I may even distress it a little as I really like shabby-chic. Makes me laugh really. Where I used to live there was a shop selling vintage and distressed furniture at horrific prices. I used to imagine my grandmother sniffing at it and saying that it was all right but could do with a good coat of paint! When I left college and had my first flat, my bedside cupboard was an orange box with a 'fabloned' top and a material 'skirt'. It did me for years.
Talu: You are very sensible to check out that there is no medical reason for your tiredness. So many people suffer from this and I can't help thinking that modern life has a lot to do with it. We are all trying to cram about 2 days activities into one and there is so much more on offer today. Our parents and grandparents had none of our labour saving gadgets and appliances and yet they still found time to sew, write letters, knit, visit friends etc. Of course, their expectations were not as great as ours and they didn't have TV, computers and all the other gubbins to take up their time.
I've no answer for you as I've been tired all my life, but one tip I was given was to keep a glass of cold water by my bed and drink it down as soon as I woke up. I don't know if it helps the tiredness but it certainly gets you out of bed as you usually have a lightning dash to the loo.

I just want to say 'THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU' to whichever wonderful friend on this thread (sorry I can't remember who exactly) last year advised me to apply for PIP. :A
I had not applied for any benefit as didn't really believe I was entitled to anything. However, I did go thru the process, and though it has taken nearly a year, I have just heard that I HAVE been granted some. YAHOO!!!! Means might be able to have the heating on occasionally this winter.:j:j:j
I am sooooo grateful.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0 -
Well done AOT! What fantastic news!
Really fancied a take away this evening as I'm just so tired but have resisted and cooked a big batch of veggi chilli - we're having it as burritos this evening. The rest will go in the freezer. I had to go back to bed at 10am as I felt so tired I thought I might actually pass out - went straight to sleep and woke 2 hours later! Must have needed it. Could happily go back to bed now too.
I did manage to finish a paper cut this afternoon that I just love, it was a pleasure to design and cut (pictures on my homepage) - hope the customer is pleased with it. Got the next 6 orders all designed so I can just keep cutting and framing - business seems to be going well
Just strained the apple, blackberry and elderberry wine - my golly it's lovely! Can't wait for it to finish. Started some apple wine off too - we will have something homemade to drink for Christmas!"Start every day off with a smile and get it over with" - W. C. Field.0 -
Did an MS this morning - weather really grey with some heavy downpours & high winds so decided to clear out the mountain of cherry tomatoes in the fridge. Made a nice soup with them & not to waste the oven also did a Lemon Drizzle for DH. Feeling quite virtuous
Nothing I fancy on the box tonight so I'll be doing a few little sewing jobs for DGD. She wants me to turn her playsuit into shorts as its too tight across her 'chesticals' & take the sleeves out of a Tshirt so I'll make a start on those for her.
Pooky - your wine sounds delish - will you be able to wait 'till ChristmasSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0 -
My laptop battery has finally died so I will have to use DH's previous PC as and when I can.
well done to resisting the takeaway call Pooky!
your break away sounded perfect (well if you take out the in-laws) kez. Glad you got away.
great news re the PIP AOT.
well done with your poorly lady fuddle
and now DH re-emerges from the bath and demands his PC back....
bye......0
