curriy's price promise fiddles

Options
i've just been shopping around for the best deal on a new fridge for my dad. i found a zanussi ZRG16603WA for a reasonable price of £199.99 at curry's.

however a bit more shopping around and i found a ZRG16600WA at john lewis's for £179.

so i thought great! i can knock curry's down on price and they'll beat it by 10% too.

oh! hold on! ones a ZRG16603WA the other is ZRG16600WA.
they're different models. so whats the difference?

nothing! i've compared technical specs and even the photo's

they are the same fridge. curry's just seem to market it with a ever so slightly different model number.

is this just a blatant way to escape their own price promises? they will only match exact like for like products.

only two other retailers sell the same one as curry's. while alot more stores stock the other model.

    They are not the same,

    No fiddle there

Just buy the one from John Lewis.

Are you sure Currys say we will beat it by 10% or do they actually say 10% of the difference which in actual fact is £2.....

Ah! i see! looks like they've changed that! i used this price promise rule a while back and it was match the price and then beat it by 10%.

looks like goalposts have been moved yet again.

their sneaky tactics have even fooled you. currys tech specs are listed ever so slightly different. yet if you find the tech spec for that same model at another retailer you find the true tech spec which is identical to the john lewis one

think i'll just go with john lewis though. no point wasting my time with a company that plays sneaky games.

What does it matter if this is the same spec. , this model has been produced by the manufacturer with a different model number ............so it's a different model.

If you DID get 10% discount, that was someone's mistake.

It has been 10% of the difference for as long as I can remember.

Manufacturers supply retailers with slightly different models that are apparently the same and have done for as long as I can remember.

Me too, I think they rely on the buyer to misread the text, which most people do.

B&Q among others say exactly the same thing on their advertising.

They have never fooled me, I have bought quite happily from Currys.

this situation is prevelant in the supermarkets too. mr lewis did something on tv a while back about it.

what is interesting is that with the big three supermarkets now doing their comparisons with each other and giving you the difference back. yet they've now started to get manufacturers to produce different size versions of the same product. thus not being able to compare with similar products in other shops.

this is almost an identical trick to the one i've highlighted in this story! same product but ever so slightly different by model number only!

i cant help it if im trying to get the best deal.

i though this website was all about saving money!

I went to my local currys to look at a 40" Samsung I seen in tescos just about a 10 minute walk away. the currys sale person seen me looking and asked if he could help. I told him tescos was £20 cheaper as they were doing a deal. he basically argued different model but it was not, it was the same model number + he never mentioned 10% just a price match. I bought in tescos

well a slight update. i emailed currys complaining about the model being identical in all but the model number and that john lewis's sold the identical type of fridge for £20 less.

and now currys have cut their price.

hahaha! too late! bought it now from john lewis's anyway.

thats £180 less that curry's will get off me. all for playing a trick like that!
i hope they take more notice in future. comet used to play games like that too. look where that got them!

Having worked for companies that offer price promises, i can tell you that they ask the manufacturer for an exclusive model number. It is exactly the same as other retailers just a different model number.

Its the same when they say the have an exclusive TV or washing machine etc, its just a different model number, all the other retailers will have it, just with a different model number
