Backtomum where do you live?Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?0

I'm sorry to hear about the car - they are a constant thorn in the side. If you buy brand new and shell out 10K+ but no troubles for a few years or spend 1-3K on a car and be constantly dipping into your pocket to repair the bloody thing. Trouble is, you're over a barrell so you get it fixed. Could get the coach or the train? I know this may curtail your plans in Torbay but at least it would get you there.
Don't agree, pick up the 'right car' and you won't have many problems. Stay away from high perfomance cars and those with loads of gadgets and go for a solid, reliable diesel car from VW/Toyota and you won't have problems IF you take someone with you who knows about cars when buying - and DON'T ever buy brand new, you might as well make a bonfire with your money due to depreciation0 -
Dont know much about cars but do know about Car hire - yep some places let you do one way rentals (OWR) but there is normally and additional charge of £15 + on these (sometimes its free if its a regular route i.e birmingham - london as someone else will do OWR back to orginal destination).
If you do hire a car do think very carefully about taking the additonal insurance - it often bumps up the cost but if you have a accident or if someone else dings you in a carpark and drives of you will be liable up to the excess amount (normally £500) if you get a small scratch they can charge you to repair it AND charge you the hire they loose on the car being of the road (stopday charges are charged in case of repair on some rentals depending what contract you are on). *** IF YOU DONT WANT extra insurance make sure you dont sign for it - even sign the form and write on it underneat declined extra insurances ** if you sign for the extra insurance you will not be able to get it back at the end of the hire - there attitude is 'you signed for it - so wecovered you for that time period'.
I cant totally sympathise over the car thing - i thought i had choosen a more reliable second hand car (my old car 76,000 cost £300 had it 16 months but wouldnt have passed its mot NEVER broke down) Paid £900 for my car (33,00 miles on clock fiesta) and it broke down 2 days after i got it - paid £140 for repairs............ it now has another issue .............i have only had it 2 months....:-( so know how hard it is. I couldnt have committed to a car loan at the moment - i was lucky that my MIL paid for 75% of my car - but obv i am paying for the repairs and am also scarred my car is going to keep breaking down.
My DH bought a new car he felt the same about constantly paying for repairs and although we have had 'hassle free' motoring the depreciation is absoutely huge.... i wish DH would get a second hand car one that has been independently checked before purchase as i think this is the way to go (esp after my exp).
I do hope you get everythign sorted.

It sucks when cars go wrong - it's always expensive!
I drive a fairly old car (s reg) and i expect to spend a certain amount a year on servicing / repairs, so i try and budget for this and stick about £30 a month into a seperate account - it may not always cover the cost of MOT's or exhausts/brakes going etc but it does help.Snootchie Bootchies!0 -
