The surveyor overvalued the property (up for £140k, offered and accepted at £130k, valuation at £160k, eventually sold for £125k).

Who was the surveyor valuing for?

For and on behalf of Countrywide (broker) itself, on my instruction. The valuation was supplied to Halifax (among others; it was Halifax who provided the AIP) by the broker but the surveyor was never, to my knowledge, directly in contact with anyone at an actual mortgage provider.

What can I say for myself? I was in a bad situation and let myself be taken along for the ride. At the end of the day I lost the purchase and it allowed things to settled down so that I did not proceed any further with Countrywide.

Hopefully this information helps those above asking the questions. I did go and double-check the paperwork to confirm it wasn't a half-remembered nightmare: it's all true.
