Free or Cheap 'Mobile' gaming

Finally, a gaming board!! :T

With all this talk of Xbox and Playstation, it shouldn't be forgotten that mobile gaming is a massive sector. Not only through traditional handhelds such as your 3DSs' and your Vitas, but mobile phones, whether its Windows Phone, Apple or Android.

The great thing about mobile phone games is a lot of them are completely FREE, but offer a lot of in-app purchases to 'help' players make the most of their games. Often this is in the form of speeding up in game timers to aid completing missions faster or making resources available quicker.

There are some real gems of games that are completely free, or what I consider to be great value at less that a quid. Publishers also have sales, meaning games either get price reductions or made available free for a limited time.

The in-app purchase games (oft called FREEMIUM games) also need not be a money-sink. A lot of the time, these types of games can be enjoyed without ever having to spend a penny.

There are numerous ways to remain informed about cheap or reduced price mobile games. There is a plethora of gaming review websites that you can check out. Apple also have an 'App of the Week' on their iTunes store, which often selects a game to be free for a week. Titles given away free like this include several of the Angry Birds franchise, as well as some other popular games.

I would like to suggest that if anyone has any free or cheap mobile game recommendations, then post here!

I'd like to start the ball rolling by bringing IGN's daily app store update to everyones attention. The update outlines several games which get updated, but also those which are reduced in price and freebies. IGN also offers a free game of the month, which is almost always a quality title.

I'll start with a few apps that are on my iPhone home screen at present:

Candy Crush Saga - (FREEMIUM) a match 3 puzzler similar to Bejewelled, which takes you through hundreds of levels. Levels can vary from being achieve a score with a limited time, to matching specific colour 'candies' a certain time, to clearing obstacles from the level. The game employs a somewhat maddening model of limiting you to 1 'life' every 30 minutes, which can accumulate up to a maximum of 5. This hurts when you are stuck on a particular level. The steep in app purchases allow you to up the accumulative limit to 8 lives, as well as replenish lives when empty. You can also purchase the option to start with certain powerups in each level.

It's a nice enough game in short bursts, forced upon you by the limited life system. You can link the game to facebook to gift lives to other players, as well as unlock further levels with other players help. Do make sure to adjust your facebook publishing rights settings for the app to stop the inevitable spamming of timelines these games employ!

Search for 'Apps gone free' on the Apple store. It lists usually 6-10 apps that you usually have to pay for that are currently free for a limited time.

I was also going to recommend 'Apps gone free' so many great apps on it everyday.
Just a little tip if you want to replenish your lives on Candy Crush saga for you here.(works on iPhone)
When you run out instead of waiting hours for new lives just put your phone clock time forward by a few hours, then open the game and you will have 5 new lives to use!
Don't forget to alter your clock back though, you can thank my wife for this tip

There's definitely a ton of great free games that you can play on mobile/tablet.

Here are some of my favourites that have free versions that I'd recommend giving a try:

1. Angry Birds (Normal version, Space version, Rio version, Star Wars version)
2. Candy Crush Saga - note that there are some expensive upgrades in the game but you can get by without them and can get Facebook friends to help you without paying if you get stuck
3. Super Monsters Ate My Condo - great addictive puzzle game and can be played totally friee
4. Words With Friends / Scramble With Friends - the free version just has ads in between moves
5. Coin Dozer - little ads at the bottom of the screen but doesn't disrupt gameplay
6. Fruit Pop - another puzzle game
7. Find Differences
8. Mega Run
9. Doubledown Casino - very fun casino app with a lot of the real slots. The daily spin gives you free credits but those run out pretty quickly. Still good for a free app though
10. What's The Phrase - fun game, a bit like Wheel of Fortune that you can play against friends for free

Pretty sure all of above were free, and all have provided a lot of entertainment as well.
