Bit strong for interview stage (could they ensure )
    Ask yourself:
Do you really want this new job ?
How many are being interviewed from the pile that applied ? 40+ applicants with about 6 - 8 being interviewed is common. Your competition will be strong - very strong - so say/do nothing that gives them a reason to bin you.

I wouldn't mention it until the offer is made and if they ask you during the interview try ''well my present salary is a little above your minimum and it would be nice to maintain that figure but I am flexible'' (smile as you say it !!):)

Maybe I am just very confident in my abilities and know that I am worth it ;) It has always worked for me but I take your point about how much the OP wants the job.

for me it is a dealbreaker and I would never consider moving sideways for less money unless there were significant perks. If you don't ask you don't get.

I work in management in local authorities and as a result I often interview staff. I don't think I have ever taken into consideration where someone would sit on the salary scale when picking my preferred candidate. there is money put aside that covers up to the top of the scale plus on-costs so it doesn't really matter where the person goes on the scale. I just want the best candidate for the job who can do it with the least fuss and will get the best outcomes.
If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!

The post is entry level with no previous experience necessary
That points to bottom of the pay grade start.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

I work LA and interview. I have no issues with a candidate asking about pay grades and where they will be appointed.

Official line is the bottom of the scale however an existing LA candidate will if moving side ways transfer across on their existing scale point plus 1 increment if not at top of pay scale already. External candidates, we will be open to negotiation after we have decided to appoint them.

You should ask at interview if the LA you are applying to has gone through Job Evaluation. If they haven't you may find your pay changed in the next few months/year as all LA have to undertake this exercise and generally office jobs go down and aside from appealing there is nothing you can do about it.

    I had my interview :-)

I wasn't going to mention pay but they asked me where I expected to be appointed and I told them what I was on and said I wouldn't be comfortable going lower but I wouldn't expect anything higher either. It's only just above the minimum so you never know! I know it is only entry level but I have quite varied experience and have a degree which I personally think is worth something.
The interview went really well I think, they were only interviewing today so very few candidates for interview. Fingers crossed!!
Ill let you guys know if I get it or not next week :-)

Did you have any tests? I have a English and maths test. I'm not worried as they are very simple.

    What were you asked?

I had a half hour test, I literally put the pen down as they walked back in the room. It was a very simple test, just making sure my maths and English skills are up to scratch but to be honest anyone with GCSE's in those subjects would have been able to do it!
I was asked the usual questions. The general tell me about yourself then things like when have you dealt with a difficult customer, what would you do if someone said this or that etc. If you do a little preparation you will be fine!

And they matched my current salary! So I will be taking home the same amount but spending about half of what I do now on travel!
