Cleaning Challenges

Hi
I have a couple of "challenges" for all you cleaning experts!
First does anyone have any idea how to clean suede settees? We have 2, they are covered with throws to protect from the pets but the arms, which are not protected from us humans are becoming really greasy and yuk! and I really don't want to have to resort to antimacassars (spelling?) and cover them up too. But they sure do need a clean. Suede brushes etc are worse than useless so I'm hoping someone has a bright idea for me, lol

Secondly my kitchen sink is I think made from sort of composit(e) material. i.e. it doesn't feel like plastic or fibreglass. Its supposed to be a sort of oatmeal colour but is now so stained its driving me mad. Bleach just takes the colour out (I've tried it on the drain). Things like soda crystals, Flash, Stardrops etc have no effect at all. Scrubbing with one of the Flash erasers does get a bit off, but it only comes back the next day (the stain, not the eraser, ha ha). Does any one know how to make the flippin thing look better?

Hoping you can help. Thanks.

  • Hi,

re the sofas - I am no use!!! I have 3 kids so suede is a no in this house!!

Your sink however I may be able to help with... I get this stuff called de-solv-it Max strength degreaser. Orginally from kleenze, then lakeland who were cheaper - but have just had a quick look there and I can't see it...

Anyway this stuff is great smells of oranges but is really good at bringing my sink up nice and clean. A tougher test is in the playroom - ikea plastic tables and my kids... the younger 2 like to draw with crayon/felt tip on the table rather than on the paper... this stuff takes it off with nothing left behind (so they do it again and again!) Gets rid of all sorts of marks and can be used on most surfaces but not suede, rubber, leather, silk, untreated wood or elastic.

I have this hiding in the cupboard for when "homemade cleaning recipes" are no use....

Hope you manage to complete your tasks!

I have the same type of sink as you, and it really really is a pain to keep clean isn't it. However, I recently found a miracle cure. It's those dense eraser type sponge thingys( you get them from any pound shop). Just a rub over with one of those and all the marks just vanish.
Sorry I can't help with your sofa - no experience there.

OR - maybe the same eraser?

ohhh! I said in my post that I had tried the eraser but I find the marks just come back once I've used the sink a few times - also it didn't get it clean by any means :( Maybe I'm just not rubbing hard enough?? With my bad neck and back that's entirely possible lol. On the other hand it could be that I've just let mine get too damn grotty! I'n so temped to throw some bleach on or buy some Vim!
I'll try the eraser again when I've got some elbow grease stored up!

Gosh! I would never have thought of vinegar for suede! Shall give it a gentle go and see what occurs. Thanks Poppie
