Baking using nuts

Hope this is the right place to post this - it is really a baking question - but I'm hoping that those of you out there with family members with nut allergies can help.
Our school is a nut free zone - so obviously peanuts, walnuts etc are out for packed lunch cakes. However, does coconut also trigger an allergy? or could I put coconut cake in the p/lunches?

Hi, TM! According to this site, coconut allergy is rare in the UK, but can be a problem for people who are sensitive.
Might be worth asking the school for guidance, but my guess would be that a school that's a *nut free zone* won't be taking any risks.

Hi thriftmonster,
Our primary school is a nut free zone too and they have specified that lunches must not include coconut.

Most 'nuts' are not true nuts. Almonds, Brazils, Pistachios, Peanuts and Cashew amongst others are not nuts in a botanical sense. However in a cooking sense they are all regarded as nuts. If a school is a nut free zone I would expect Coconuts to banned as well. It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends

My dd is allergic to peanut and pinenut (peanut is not a true nut either btw), but she is definitely not allergic to coconut. My understanding from reading the Anaphylaxis Campaign website is that coconut allergy is rare and that people who suffer from other nut allergies are unlikely to be allergic to coconut.
My school is also nut free because of dd but I often send coconut in cakes in her lunchbox.0
