Claiming job awaiting new job's start date

Hi,

I have just applied for JSA. The thing is though that I have a new job starting within the next few weeks (I have been told between 2 and 6). I have signed a contract and the company has conducted DBS checks as required. It's basically a 100% thing.

Is it OK to claim for this period? (I think it is, as long as I still look for work during this period).

The thing is for my new job I need to wear suits everyday, and I don't own a single suit, or even office shirt and ties. This may sound stupid, or like I am lying, but I have never had a work dress code before. So, I need cash for new clothes.

Also, what will happen with the tax code for my new job? I don't want to pay emergency tax for this period. So, will the job centre give me a P45 at short notice? I have been out of the UK with a temporary job with a friend in Spain, so I haven't worked in the UK this tax year so far.

Thanks, WS! :)

I do it all the time. I work contracts and usually get offered work whilst still at previous jobs. It's fine as long as you can show you're looking for work.

You can always fill out a P46 before you receive your job centre P45, which means you wont get taxed loads.

Good luck with your new job!

Just a question not advice - do you really have to still look for work even if you have a firm job offer? I am not unemployed, I am an employer and we often have to wait for pre-recruitment checks before starting some-one.

Yes. The job seeker's agreement states that you have to do x amount of things a week to look for work. If you don't do that you haven't adhered your agreement and will be sanctioned for failing to do so.

It seems silly I know, but that's the way it works. The job centre have targets to meet and will sanction people for absolutely anything, even resorting to complete fabrication to get enough claimants sanctioned.

I've provided a link a blog entry below made by someone after they were sanctioned for getting a job and didn't continue looking for jobs before they started working.

Continue to sign on and if you are lucky enough to get an interview just tell them you can only work for 2-3 weeks.

You could look round charity shops for new smart clothes, you may find an absolute bargain in suits and shirts and definitely ties!!!
