Is there a 'wedding dress buying season'?

Options
After cancelling my wedding back in February, I have decided to sell my dress, shoes etc.

I first put them on Facebook selling pages and managed to sell my tiara and veil, but my dress and shoes had no interest.

I then put them on Preloved and Gumtree but still no bites.

I'm not too bothered about the shoes, but really want rid of the dress now because it's getting in my way!

I thought of eBay, but I've never sold on there and looking at other dresses on there they don't seem to be selling at the moment.

Is there a time of year for it?

I would say as most weddings are in the summer (probably May-September?) then a lot of brides will be looking for dresses over the winter, sort of 6-9 months before?

I know that in general selling dresses is tough though.

I'd say you're right bang in the middle of 'wedding season' right now, but 'wedding dress buying season' is probably months before, maybe December/January? Although a lot of brides buy their dresses well over a year before their wedding!

You just need to find someone like me who is organising their wedding in a month, and wants a dress like "right now!". :rotfl:

Most of the wedding fayres seems to be in and around February. Maybe it's that after Christmas "right, onto the wedding!" feeling as well.

  • Yeah, most of the wedding magazines I've flipped through seem to put getting the dress as something to do around six to nine months before the wedding. So if most people are getting married between April and September they're probably looking for their dresses around October-March.

Just watch out for free listing weekends and fingers crossed. I think there might be one this weekend.

add as many pictures to listing as you can lots of angles and closeups on its details. mention the style, brand, colour, material and shape (a-line etc) in the title it really makes a difference. There are so many listings you need to hook as many people as you can to look at it. Have a really good description. mention if its been adjusted or worn. add in your height etc so people can work out if its right for them. offer to let people view before bidding. Sound as friendly as possible so people feel able to ask questions. Find out about cheap couriers beforehand. collection only really limits your end price. Hope that helps abit.

    Thanks all, that's really helpful.

I might give eBay a try when they do free listings and take some better pictures. I shall research couriers and find something to send it in first!

Oh I'd definitely second the "be as descriptive as possible" - the amount of messages I'd sent asking people how tall they were to get an idea of the dress length!

Maybe try wedding forums too, a lot of them have for sale sections and a target audience of brides looking to purchase wedding related bits!

As other posters have said definitely try to be as descriptive as possible and include pictures, your own and those from designers websites!
