Oh bless you are not being thick, sorry you dont have one, the policy of the 99p store and poundland is maximum 99p or a pound it can be below but never more than that.

but they sometimes have things on 3 for £2 etc so not always a pound or less

The 99p store have 350g smoked or plain back bacon 69p and 10 eggs 69p.

I bought 3 packs of the smoked bacon and its lovely but there were no eggs left so couldnt see size, but over a kg of bacon for 2.07 cant be bad.

Sounds a great deal but what does the bacon say on it? Fat content, pork content , how much water is in there?

Also has it shrivelled much when you cook it? Im very wary of cheap meats like this. And eggs.

I bought some from Poundland the other day for the first time to try as it was only £1.

It says on the packet 87% pork.

I cannot say if it shrivelled when cooking as my OH made me the bacon sandwich, although he did not say it did. It is very lean and has a lovely taste and so will be buying again.

I also got some packets of grated cheese for 25p reduced from £1 as the use by is the end of this week, this also tastes fine.

Home bargains have cheap Free Range Eggs. From memory they around the £1 mark for 6 large ones.

again a small egg producer really can't produce free range eggs at that price our brake even price was in the £1.50-70 area. if the bacon is selling at that price it takes roughly 10 sacks of pig feed to get a porker to weight our last load were about £10 a bag. and a weaner at 50 quid plus slaughter and butchering a 45 kg porker will sell wholesale at £2.19 a kg . remember production costs come out at £3.30 per kg. so its not surprising everyone is getting out of pigs.

    I understand that.

But many of these cut price stores are selling surplus stock from the wholesalers that they need to move on and that is why the prices are so low. Very often the shelf life is short.

Home Bargains were selling cadbury creme eggs 12 for a £1 at one point. This could not have been beating the supplier down on price.

A lady at the end of my road sells eggs at the gate £1 half a dozen - lovely happy chickens running around.

then she is underselling them by a lot. chicken food is roughly 8 quid a bag for the basic stuff. she will just be selling her spare egg not commercially. but yes they will be better eggs than shop bought free range ones. so go for it if your happy with them.

ive no problems with cheap food. in fact i will hunt it out. however we must realise the end result will be very bad for the small farmer.
  • I buy the Asda free range eggs for £1/box but I am fully aware that they aren't anywhere near as nice and yellow as proper-job free rangers, I treat myself now and again when funds permit.
