Car finance - car died!

Hi all, this may be posted in the wrong place and if that's the case I apologise.

I got a 2010 plate car in November last year. All was well until yesterday when the car broke down (started with a loud rattling sound and loss of power). I called the RAC who towed me home.
After paying to be towed to three local garages as well as the local Renault dealer, I have been told the car engine is beyond repair. I am not mechanically minded, but one of the garages actually showed me bits of metal floating in the oil. How this has happened, i have no idea, they did try to explain but I am clueless with this sort of thing.

Anyhow, the reason for this post...Renault tell me my warranty has expired (expired in March this year apparently), so I am left not knowing what to do. I cannot afford to fix the car. If Renault wont cover it, is there anything I can do via the finance company? I hate to think I may be paying £230 a month for the next four and a half years while not having a car!

Thanks for reading my hastily typed tale of panic.

Mike

    get quote for engine..

weigh up if cheaper to pay for the repair and be back on the road. Or to take the hit on what you can get for selling it as is and paying off the finance..

Assuming the car was serviced according to the required schedule then you could try contacting Renault and asking for a goodwill contribution towards repairs as it is only 3 months out of warranty and a car should last longer than 3 years. Prepare for a battle as they will refuse at first. You may need an engineers report detailing the reason for the engine dying.

I assume the dealer you purchased the car from did not offer any kind of warranty beyond what was left on the original warranty?

You could try asking Trading standards/Consumer Direct to see if there is anything that they could advise.

The finance company is only interested in getting their money back and will not help.

NB - Never buy a Renault again, nothing but problems.

I had a feeling that would be the case. Its so frustrating to have had the car 6 months and then this happens.

    Thanks for the replies.

op was it the cam belt?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

Depending upon what the problem is of course and why it happened, it would be expected that a car would last longer than 6 months.

How was the car described during the buying process?

  • It didn't surprise me to read on and learn that you were talking about a Renault. I bought a new renault clio (61 plate) and its been nothing but trouble since, first showed signs of being a lemon within first two weeks of ownership, in hindsight I should have rejected it there and then. Neither the dealer or renault group were no help whatsoever and that's a car in warranty so good luck getting anything out of them.

I am counting down the days until I can VT this lemon on them :)

Renault don't offer 5 & 7 year warranties like Hyundai and Kia - I wonder why?
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.
