Knife block and knives

I need some new kitchen knives. There are probably only three or four I really need judging by the same ones I use all the time. These are now so old they need replacing! I think I need a chef, paring and bread knife at least. Not too sure of all the names so need to go and look!
I'd like some suggestions of which makes to look at please. I've looked on Amazon and seen the Jamie Oliver ones but wonder if you are paying for his name more than the quality of the knives.
Grateful thanks!

I have just bought my first house and had no idea where to begin... my dad bought me these to match my kettle and toaster:

I have no idea about names either but there is a bread knife, large chefs (?) knife, and three other knives (paring etc.) in diminishing sizes
I think they're great and are very sharp! (Had four cuts on four seperate fingers within a week to prove it!)DEBT FREE AT LAST!

As you've worked out, you don't actually need a full set of knives.
A good place for quality knives at reasonable prices is TK Maxx. I bought a B grade Henckels chef's knife from there a few years ago and it's been absolutely brilliant. It cost £13 and the only thing I can find wrong with it is that the printing on the side of the knife is slightly off. Prices have increased since I bought that knife but you should be able to pick up a decent one for around the £20 mark.
Those three knives that you mentioned plus a sharpening steel or quality knife sharpener like this one
http://www.amazon.co.uk/AnySharp-Global-Worlds-Sharpener-Classic/dp/B001DXVL6K/ref=sr_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1371464069&sr=1-1&keywords=global+knife+sharpener
will cost you £60 ish but will last for years.
Whatever you decide to buy, I suggest you try them out for weight in a shop first even if you decide later to buy online. You don't want to get a knife or knives that you don't feel comfortable with.0 -
You usually pay for his name but I know it's a high quality too.0

Have a look in Asda they have the Kitchen Devil block at half price at the moment 15.00'
You get the block, chef, carving, bread, veg and paring knives plus four steak knives. so nine knives.
I find these are excellent and if I remember right are also guaranteed for 10 years.
Please beware though these are ultra sharp,Slimming World at target0
