hi i am hoping some one could advise,
i had two teeth filled back in march. they werent deep fillings. A couple of weeks ago one of the teeth started to hurt when i ate on it and feel sensitive when i ate or drank something hot/cold.
i noticed that a small bit of one of the fillings had broken off at the edge of my tooth, so i went back to the dentist and got it repaired.
My tooth still hurt when i ate on it and was sensitive to hot and cold, so i went back to the dentist. i was starting to think it may be another tooth. The dentist squirted cold air on my teeth and the original problem tooth really hurt. I was told to wait a couple of weeks and it would prob settle down.
Is this normal??
it dosent hurt all the time, only when i chew on it or have something cold/ hot.
would sensodine help atall?
thanks
sue

One for toothsmith I think, but when something similar happened to me they put a sedative dressing in the drilled out tooth followed by a temporary filling which was left in for a couple of weeks I think. It's some years ago now, but I think the idea was to let the jangly nerves in the tooth calm down before refilling with amalgam. (prob b a white filling now though!)0

My dentist suggested Sensodyne (or similar) dabbed neat on the tooth, but I also bought oil of clove (pharmacist queried whether a dentist had seen the tooth) which is a local anaesthetic.
I avoided using the tooth as much as possible, and it did settle.0 -
Sounds like another visit to the dentist is in order. It's not right.0

i have had a similar problem a couple of years back on another tooth on the other side, and it was sorted out the same way as yours....... but that tooth was aching all the time, not like this one that only bothers me when i eat on it or drink something cold.
maybe i just have very sensitive teeth.
thanks savingsara

They often do settle down, but go back if you feel it's not right.
It does concern me a bit that it was OK, but then became sensitive. Maybe one of the cusps of the teeth (The bumpy bits on the top) has a small crack in it.
If it seems to be getting slightly better day by day, it will probably settle. If it's staying the same, or getting worse, then get it looked at again. How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0
