How do I freeze apples and crumbles?

They had lots of bags of reduced braeburn apples at Tesco today (22p) so bought 3 bags. I'd like to grate them and freeze them ideally because I'm going to start making my own muesli. I'm new to home baking so can someone please tell me how to freeze them?

I use two different methods for freezing apples depending what I want to use them for.

    1. I peel, core, and chop and then stew until soft. Split into one apple pie size quantities and freeze in old ice cream tubs.

    or

    2. I peel, core, and chop and then blanche by very quickly dropping into boiling water and fishing straight out again. Drain and lay in a single layer (no two pieces touching) on baking trays and stick in the freezer until frozen. I then put all the frozen pieces into old ice cream tubs ready to take out as many or as little as I wish.

  • Ive been offered quite an amount of cooking apples off a neighbours tree.
Yippee as we love apple crumble. Now I know that I can get the recipe from the sticky thread. I am going to need to freeze them as im going to be making about 10. Can anyone please tell me how you do it? What do I freeze them in container wise? No I freeze them before I cook them or after and how would I defrost them when I need them.
    Thanks in advance

I've got an apple tree in my garden & freeze masses of cooking apples each year. After preparing the apples I usually just bring to the boil then transer to a container for freezing once cool. If I've made crumbles or pies & want to freeze them I cook them first & when the time comes to use them I leave them to defrost at room temperature. Then just pop them in the oven to heat through if I want it hot.

It's also possible to cook the apples as I've first detailed for freezing & prepare a batch of crumble mixture for freezing too, so to make the actual crumble as and when you'e ready to eat one. The crumble mix freezes really well. I love apple crumble & even though I have my own apple tree you are more than welcome to send a few my way.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Cut the apples and stew them with sugar and a small amount of water. When the are cooked and cooled put them in a container (empty margarine container) or in a plastic bag (if you haven't got too much space in your freezer) and freeze. I make up bags of crumble mix and this can be used straight from the freezer. I usually use 8oz flour, 4oz marge, 4oz sugar. Rub the marge and flour together (take care to do this quickly or the heat from your hands will make the marge too warm). Rub in the sugar. The crumble mix can then go into the freezer.

    Enjoy your apple crumbles!
