celebration cake advice

I want to buy a large plain iced cake to use as a celebration cake (someone else will be decorating it). I have looked at some of the supermarket ones online which seem ok but not many have the size details available.
So far the biggest round one I have seen is in M&S but it is quite expensive, ideally I'd like it to serve around 40 people. The fruit cake ones seem to serve more than the same-sized sponge - is this just based on the fact that you would cut larger pieces of sponge than fruit? I don't really mind which type of cake this is.
I also wondered if anywhere does square ones rather than round?
Any help or advice appreciated in order to shorten my trawl around the supermarkets tomorrow!
