Student Finance problem

Why is the maintenance loan for the 3rd (or last) year less than the loan for the first few years?
I wouldn't know. My Student Finance letters clearly state that the amounts are for the academic year 12/13.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

Because, as already stated by 2 other members, student finance is used to last for 52 weeks of the year when continuing. If not continuing on the next year, it will come to an end when you finish studying.
This is why students are not entitled to claim JSA during the summer (apart from extenuating circumstances, such as children), but they can in their final year summer (because they have technically finished).0 -

Still doesn't explain HB; where it is specifically only income across the academic year.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
The academic year 2012/13 runs from September 2012 to August 2013, it isn't the same as weeks in attendance.
OK then; it's only income from the day I start lectures in term 1, to the last day of term 3. Either way, it's not income for the summer holiday.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -

Your specific circumstances are not typical of the majority of students.
The simply reality for the poster's situation is that the maintenance loan is what it is and no amount of time writing to the student loan company will make any difference.
One might have thought that uni level students would already have noted that the benefit system is complicated and full of anomolies.0
