My DD intends to go to classes at our local college in Sept for BSL, but would like to do a basic online course now just to get started. She is looking at

Anyone used this company or can recommend a different course?

I started an evening class years ago but gave up. You really need to have someone to practise with every day. Best of luck.

I would be slightly skeptical with that site. I have been learning BSL for the past 3 and a bit years and am almost Level 3 qualified and the only exam board that I have used throughout 3 different colleges is 'Signature'. I would recommend checking out Signature's website and seeing if they do a taster course. However, it does seem quite genuine and it's not exactly expensive either at £19.99 for a year, I'm not really sure.

Also, my local college do a taster course which I think has just started? So maybe check out colleges near you to see if there is any over the summer. You don't need to be fully prepared when you walk in to your lesson - when I started I knew absolutely nothing and coped really well - the first year is very slow and steady and quite simple and it gradually becomes more difficult as you would expect.

I would also recommend bslhomework.org.uk which is a website devised by Signature. BSL101 is free of charge and that would be the first unit that your DD would learn at college. It will have video clips, a big dictionary of signs etc that would help her in her learning. My college provided me a free account in my second year and it was really helpful.

Sign language is a love affair that's lasted - I am about to start my fourth year in September and now I have a job working with a deaf child, good luck :)
