Any of you with computer knowledge? Help!

The laptop was working fine last night. This morning I logged on, and went online. There were various bits which had been underlined when I was searching for things. So for example, it had weight loss, so if I hovered over it, it showed me some dodgy website on how to lose weight (how apt that I am in the 5:2 diet challenge!). Since then, the laptop has started to go bonkers. I've tried going onto other websites and the pages keep popping up from somewhere and a lot more of the words are now underlined.

I've phoned a friend and he told me to download AVG and Microsoft something or the other but they keep asking me download programme after programme and it's supposedly doing every search under the sun but the problem is still there.

Please can someone tell me in basic terms what I should do? I cicked on the malware/spyware removal forum but it went straight over my head. The first programme it asked me to download won't load and I haven't got a clue what I am doing! Booohooo.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the massive rant.

PS. I do have Norton virus cleaner or whatever it is called on my laptop but obviously the monster seemed to have gone straight through it.

I've been in and out of the garden today, I've cut loads of mint and spearmint for drying, and pulled my first garlic up too :j

Sounds like either a malicious search tool has installed, potentially malware. Do you see any new toolbars installed?

Could you use another browser to downlôad Avg etc or are they infected too?

Limited only by the restricted opening hours (and the annoyance of a glitch known to be working but shops shut :(). Otherwise, every day is a shopping day :).
