Help anaemia and cooking OS style

I have suffered anaemia on and off since a teenager and was always treated with iron tablets until 1 GP decided to try and find out why! I was 35 when diagnosed with coeliac disease! Try and get your Gp to find out the cause.
Ask what your Hb (haemoglobin levels) are. Normal values for females are between 11.5 and 16.0 g/dL (Oxford handbook of A & E Medicine). My GP told me anything under 10 and he could write me a certificate for time off work to rest. When my GP called me back when my level was 7.4 she wrote me out a certificate for 6 weeks. I used to take my 3 year old to nursery go home and sleep. If your levels are this low your GP needs to be finding the cause and treating it.
Vitamin C aids absorbtion of iron and tea prevents absorbtion so stick with the OJ when taking tablets. I too had problems when given Ferrous sulphate tabs but a different GP prescribed a different form of tab (cant remember which one at the mo) and the tummy troubles stopped.
All green leafy veg contain iron, as does red meat, apricots, cereals etc.
Good luck in getting it sorted.Mortgage, we're getting there with the end in sight £6587 07/23, otherwise free of the debt thanks to MSE help!0 -
The liquid iron supplement that previous poster was trying to remember name of is Floradix - it's not cheap, but very easy to digest and (I think) rather nice tasting. I've used it a few times when really run down and recommend it.0
