Home hair dye. Brassy gold to beautiful beige...?

We've all seen that advert...the yellow fairy, turns into the ash blonde beauty with a simple shampoo.
Total crap! All it does is give you a grey hue to your hair and takes away the shine.
I have been home dying for years to save money (seventy quid for a cut and tint/highlights at my local hairdresser...every six weeks??)
I have it down to a fine art...I can section it off, use mirrors for the back and sides and have an even result, but it is still brassy and gold at the roots..and I hate it.
Does anyone have the answer to beige blonde hair at home? or do I need to go and pay for it.
I am naturally a darkish 7, with about 30% grey, and I use Goldwell 8NA and 9.0 bought from Salon services.
many thanks

To get rid of brassiness in the hair you need to use a colour with ash in it, this will counteract the red that causes the brass.
Are you referring to the purple shampoos as I do find them effective for removing the brass tone.0 -
I use John Frieda purple shampoo once or twice a week and it definitely keeps the yellow at bay.
As AT says above, chose a colour that is described as ash, cool or beige. Anything called golden will be yellow toned. I have a golden tone to my natural colour but use Natural Pale Blonde by Nice & Easy and I get a really nice result from it. Combined with regular cuts to get rid of the over dyed ends I have a very successful home colouring experience. What shade/make are you using?0 -
Hi, as I said above I use Goldwell 8NA (/neutral ash) which is a professional colour, as opposed to a shop bought home dye. I still end up with a goldie brass shade at the roots, and when I tone with a purple shampoo I get grey lengths.
Maybe it is just my hair and I need to go to a salon0 -
I saw a youtube video where this lady uses box dye to go over salon done highlights, to make the brassiness go away, it works wonders! The brand she uses is Clairol Perfect 10. Their Ash blonde one might work for you? I get my hair highlighted every 5 months but i always come home and tone over it with Perfect 10 haha0

Fudge Violet shampoo works well for me.
Use ordinary shampoo for the first wash, then a small blob (10p size) leaving it on for one or two mins max.
I overdid on both the first time and yes it went grey......soon washed out though.0 -
Thanks all for replies0

fudge violet? What make is that? I also have the brassy look, but am not sure its limited to home dying. The salon tries all sorts on my golden brown hair but most dyes seem to add red which is just not present in my natural hair colour.0
