I have a Panasonic DMR-EX773EBK HDD DVD recorder, which is only 16 months old, but of course only has a 12 month warranty:mad:
It was working just fine last night, but sat down to watch the second part of a drama on the hard drive tonight and noticed that it is completely dead, no clock, no life at all. OH has checked fuse in plug and disconnected leads and reconnected them, but nothing at all.
Just wondered if anyone had any suggestions, or is it the scrapheap.
We always Panasonic because I thought they were a really good make, but our last DVD recorder only just limped to 2 years. However, the TV is coming up 5 years.
Do you reckon its worth contacting Panasonic, or will they just say tough?:(
Many thanks for any advice anyone can proffer. Next time I will pay a bit more and buy from John Lewis to get the 2 year warranty.

Panasonic would be within their rights to say "tough", because it's down to them to decide how long their warranty is.
However, at 16 months old you would almost certainly have a case under the Sale of Goods Act to request of the company that you bought it from that they replace it.
That company would be within their rights to insist that you get an expert to testify that the fault was not caused by misuse and that 16 months is not an acceptable working life. I doubt any expert would dispute the latter.0 -

I bought it from Amazon and having spoken to them this evening it appears that they only offer a 12 month warranty on electrical goods.
Said they were sorry and I should contact Panasonic about it.
I just can't understand what has gone wrong with it.
When the previous one went wrong it still had power, just made a horrible clunking sound.
I just don't know if it is worth taking to a repairer, they charge so much now. Sad state of things in this throw away society.
Perhaps I should suggest to Amazon that as they save so much tax the least they could do is replace my dvd recorder!Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
sale of goods act says goods have to last a reasonable time, regardless of warranty, but you could try contacting panasonic first saying you expected something from a quality brand to last longer than 16 months, before using your rights against the retailer or credit card section 75 if you used it to purchase the product.
Don't give up because the warranty is only 12 months.
If the cable and fuse are ok, it sounds like the power supply.!!

I had a problem with a Panosonic camera that was out of warranty and they sorted it free.Give them a ring and try0

Certain Panas are known for weak power supply ICs, for example;

Replacement is simple for a competent repairer, so if you can find one .... But whether it's worth it is another matter. It cost me almost £80 for this to be done on an E55 a few years back, and now that tech has moved on, the machine was only worth £35 in an eBay sale this year.
Boxed working 773s appear to be going on eBay at present for £60 or so, therefore hardly seems worth repair at present...0 -

I contacted Panasonic but got no joy from them:mad:
I was told that I would have to take it to the nearest authorized repairer - which would be a 70 mile round trip - and they might, dependent upon the report from the repairer, consider making a contribution towards the cost of repair, but could not guarantee this would be the case.
I have already contacted Amazon via the chat facility in India and was told they only give 12 months warranty.
So don't know what to do now.:(Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
Small claims action against Amazon?0

Small claims action against Amazon?
But would I have a leg to stand on when they state that they only give a 12 month warranty?
I must admit I have never even heard of the Sale of Goods Act before.
Would it be worth getting in touch with them again and mentioning this?
I did read a bit about the credit card section 75 thing, but apparently that only appears to apply if you bought direct from the manufacturer and not through an intermediary - it even mentioned Amazon!Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
The link below may be of interest but it is 4 years old

Note that Dawg got a repair out of Panasonic but it seems if anything, it is Amazon as the seller who have responsibility.
Amazon's guy in India may know nothing of our SOGA.
Btw there's a MSE Consumer Rights forum which might have some useful threads0 -
