I wonder if that's a blanket NHS policy, or whether it varies from one trust to another, also depending on the level of work involved?
I think a phone call to another trust would be worthwhile ...

It's definitely not a blanket NHS policy....in the area I work they didn't even conduct CRBs AT ALL!

Maybe it's because it's all new due to the restructuring but not a single new person at our agency has had a CRB done. If so, then we didn't know about it, but we never had any paperwork asking us to declare anything conviction or caution-wise.

Do they ever give out cautions for 'KNOWINGLY CAUSE A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION'?
:rotfl: I know, I saw that one and wondered how likely it was that you'd be in a position to job hunt after that!

I heard through the grapevine there are opportunities in North Korea.

Once again, thanks for the continued support and reassurance, it helps to keep my hopes alive because as it stands, I directly asked the recruitor after being told of the decision whether their decision would change if I applied 8-10 years later and they said I can try.

I think there is a general misunderstanding for the general public about cautions although a caution is not a conviction, it forms a part of a person's criminal record. I think a lot of people accept a caution thinking that it won't impact on their criminal record. For lots of NHS jobs there is a requirement for an enhanced CRB (now DBS). In my experience I come across a lot of people who don't declare cautions but once they are questioned about it, ie. when we get the DBS through, they are then very honest about it.

It all depends on the caution/offence - I have seen pages long CRB forms that havent stopped me from progressing their employment. However, for a finance job for instance I'd been wary of a recent conviction/caution for say a fraud/theft offence and would want to interview the person to get their side of the story prior to carrying out further actions.

Many thanks, I was nothing but honest about my caution, I presented all the facts, my mitigating circumstances but wasn't given a chance. My major concern is that the caution is also listed incorrectly because its not the one I signed for, the act is the same, the subsection and hence the title of the caution is such that something innocent has made me sound like a calculated criminal when all I did was log into a friends account without their permission.

What I intend to do now is not let my inner demons get the better of me, I'll write to the chief officer of the relevant constabulary and request that they revise the designation of the caution which to my knowledge is incorrect. It's an uphil battle against a competitive jobs market when the stigma of a criminal record becomes a further handicap but I'm in my 20s with hope and drive and will fight for what I think I deserve.

That's it, remain positive; never let life impede on your ability to manifest your dreams. My brother is a great example, caution/conviction during the early 90's, this has not held him back, though he's encountered downright discrimination along the way, he is now a social work manager. Anything is possible if you have drive and determination to succeed :D

I used to work in a recruitment role for the local council and when someone had a caution or conviction on their record we would look at a) relevance - eg anything violent working with vulnerable people would be an immediate no and
    b) time elapsed - so if it had just happened recently this would a lot more likely to lead to loss of job offer than if it was years ago.

Violent or dishonest (eg theft/fraud) convictions were most likely to lead to the job offer being revoked.
