Council Tax And Interest

in Cutting tax
Last week my valuation office confirmed that I have been in the wrong banding bracket and are now going through the motions of having it corrected and working out how much they have to give back having over charged since it started in 1993!!
I have put it to the council that as a tax and with any other tax overpayment, that interest is payable on the amount. The council have come back to the effect that although there is nothing to suggest otherwise that they have not and are not prepared to pay interest.
My question is, is this legal and is there anyone out there who has been paid interest on their re-payment??
Thanks

The situation with council tax is somewhat different.
They are not allowed to pay interest on the repayments, neither are they allowed to charge interest on arrears.0 -
A lot of people have had success with requesting interest from the Valuations Office as it their error that caused the banding to be incorrect, not the Councils.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
