Assignments are marked by the tutor but then moderated internally by another tutor and then may be called for external moderation.
I suspect that the assignments will have been given back for corrections and the tutor will have noted what was required to achieve a merit or distinction on that specific module. If the student still doesn't meet the criteria the merit cannot be given.
Additionally, if a student is very late with a hand in some tutors cap the module at a pass.0 -
It's worth noting that there's no such thing as just scraping through with a merit. She was either awarded a merit for the assignment or she wasn't. There's no such thing as a 'good' merit or a 'bad' merit.
Assignments are marked by a tutor and a sample of all the marked assignments are verified by another internal tutor. If the course has been externally inspected this year the verification will have been looked at by an external verifier from Edexcel. If they disagree with the marking then they could demand that everything is remarked , but this is fairly unusual in my experience.
All the pass and merit criteria for each unit should be clearly listed on all the assignments, so you could go through them all and see in how many units she's met all the merit criteria.
I should think her course must be pretty much over by now, so she should hear soon anyway. All our grades had to be submitted last week (although that could be our college's deadline rather than Edexcel's).0 -
Seems to me she needs to go and see her tutor and get a proper answer to the question "have I got sufficient marks for a merit or not?". The tutor should kinow her marks so far exactly, and nshould also know exactly what mark is needed overall, as stated by several posters above.0

OP did you ask your daughter if she had the opportunity to correct her assignment and meet the merit/distinction criteria?0

There's one she didn't do the merit task on which was in February because she was ill. Her tutor says its too late for her to complete that one now. But as far as I know she has got merit in all the other assignments. Her tutor isn't very good at keeping you informed. She hasn't been giving my daughter much feedback about her work. And when I ring them to find out how she's doing they seem to talk to me like they are annoyed about me phoning. We will have to see what the next couple of weeks brings.0 -

Dont forget that they may well have been giving excellent feedback but to your daughter, not to you and that it may well be your daughter that is deciding not to give you all the details.
It may be they are annoyed about you phoning rather than allowing you daughter to take control of her own education.0 -

The issue with assignment work is that to be fair to all there is a specific deadline for a hand in of work. When that is reached all the students hand in ( that is the theory anyway!!) and it is marked.
At that point they will all have had say, five weeks to do all the criteria. If some students are very close to achieving the merit written feedback is given and they are allowed to re submit. If a student simply hasn't bothered to attempt the merit or is no where near achieving it, the tutor will often just give the work a pass.
It would not be fair for some students to get work back four/five times or be allowed to do the merit months after the event.
If this has been repeatedly explained to your daughter the tutor will wonder why she is not giving you this info. Another issue could be that often we are not allowed to pass such info to parents if the students have either completed a non disclosure form (which they are entitled to do) or are over 18. They could be giving you as much info as they can without falling foul of the above.
BTEC courses are quite structured, but the tutor does have leeway based on attendance, volume of work, and re submissions, but they still have to be fair and follow the principles laid down.0
