Council Tax and being a student

Hello all,
I have just finished my three long years at University. I live with my boyfriend and we are band D council tax with 25% exemption as I am a student.
As I have finished Uni now does anyone know when we will lose the exemption? It is soon or August after lots of people have done re-takes?
Does anyone also know how this is calculated? Do they do it like, stopped being a student on 31/8/07 so new bill for 31/8/07 - 31/3/08 is just at full rate disregarding the payment alrady made. Very confusing I know!

I can't be 100% sure but I would say the official end date of the university year- ask yours. I know I was charged full rates over the summer immediately after my third year even though I was starting again as postgrad the following term.Aiming to pay off mortgage by my 30th birthday... £39438 to go!

Technicaly its once the univrsity certifies you are mo longer a full time student - the date we use in our dept is the one stated on the student certificates as the end of the course.
The usual way , because the acct shows you partner as the only liable party, is to close the acct and raise a new one in both names to ensure both liable parties are shown. In this case any credit on the previous acct would need to be transferred across if you want it to count against the account in both of your names and you will then begin to pay the full charge.I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0
