  • Makes sense - there's a lot to be said for motivation/comfort level. For us, financially it would make more sense to not OP the mortgage at all and just invest the money somewhere as we'd likely come out ahead numbers-wise. I'm far happier (and more motivated) to OP the mortgage directly, so that's our plan.
  • Yes I agree - my current interest rate is pretty low so it would definitely make sense to save more rather than OP quite so much, but seeing the mortgage balance drop is just so much more rewarding than seeing savings increase IMO! And now that MF is so within reach on our current home I just want to throw every spare penny at it :D

  • Not much in the way of MF activities today as I'm travelling with work for a couple of days - downside was a small spend on breakfast on the hop, upside is free lunch and dinner today and breakfast and lunch tomorrow - and small amount of CC cashback for all the travel and meal expenses.

Yesterday was a NSD and tomorrow should be too.

Yesterday was a NSD as planned, and today I made a small OP of £42 thanks to some fleabay sales.

My standard monthly payment came out yesterday and I'm currently at £42,930 - with interest I'm likely to end the month about £20 over my £43k target so need to find this somehow!

Grocery shopping tomorrow, will be a "stock-up" one I think as we have a £5 Lidl threshold MOC to use, but spends later in the month will be lower as a result. Planning more batch cooking this weekend if the freezer space allows!

Update on my mini goals for the month:

My goals for the coming month:
    - reduce mortgage to £43k before next payday (this will be a stretch!) DONE - need to find £20 to counteract the interest charges which will be applied over the month
    - stick to grocery budget of £140 £46.40/£140
    - eBay sales of £25 DONE - currently at £33, new target of £50

Congrats! Especially on the ebay sales - I'm struggling to find things to sell at the moment (wish I could touch DH's giant media collection, lol).

Thanks, I go through phases - it takes so long and I sometimes think it's not worth the hassle, but it has the added benefit of decluttering too :)

I've been lucky and managed to get decent prices on a couple of old uni textbooks - only took me 10 years to list them...

Will hopefully list a few more items at the weekend, I'm going to aim for at least 5.

I think it was you mentioned removing all CDs/DVDs from cases for storage, and either moving them to the loft or throwing away? If so, I'd really advise you to store them - if you ever do persuade DH to get rid, you will stand a far better chance of selling if you have the cases. Places like Music Magpie don't pay a huge deal, but it's kind a worth it (IMO) for a bulk sale, and they only accept items with all the original packaging.

Yes, that was me. Good point on the cases - I think DH has probably already thrown out a lot of cases (but then, the chances of him getting rid of much of his collection are slim to none). He did actually mention doing a Music Magpie collection next week, so I think he has identified a few things he can get rid of! Even if all it does is get the boxes out of our lounge (where they've been for 2 years :() that would be a bonus. Will offer to add whatever MM gives to DH's allowance (as he bought them originally with his money before we met), but will secretly hope he opts to OP the mortgage. :rotfl:

We do have plenty of space in the loft, so will check with DH on the remaining cases and see if they can go up there. Thanks!

Good and bad news of the MF front: we're on track with our grocery challenge, having spent £99.73/£140 with just over two weeks to go but having well-stocked cupboards and freezer. More batch cooking done at the weekend. Should really only need to buy fresh fruit and veg for at least the next week, probably longer.

The bad news: our just-out-of-warranty new freezer broke! Cue cry for help to our lovely neighbours! Luckily seems like we managed to save most of the food, however we now have the cost of a replacement :(

In other MF news I'm up to 5 NSDs in a row - the only exceptions being a Christmas gift for DH (which I have a savings pot for) and a rather lavish city break booked for next year (paid for using mostly airmiles, and the rest from our holiday savings). Holidays are my definite weakness and the one thing I am not prepared to skimp on in the interests of MF (though we will scale back slightly...)

I also finally got around to listing some items from our wedding (almost two years ago...) for sale, and have a potential £25 sale already.

Well done on the grocery front! We definitely don't spend that little (though if we genuinely meal-planned we might, we just buy supplies for meals we have regularly and then make up meals as we go).

Do you have a charity shop that does furniture/electrics near you? We bought 90% of the furniture in our house from British Heart Foundation, and also got a chest freezer for £40. They usually have other kitchen electrics when we go in, so it might be worth seeing if there's something similar in your area.
