Rev Chartres believes boomers have plundered the country's wealth and not put back in
I imagine the venerable cleric's views are not going to be popularly received on here. Though he is, it has to be said, just the latest in a succession of high profile people who have said exactly the same thing.
Take less, bishop tells baby boomers
Baby boomers are a special “fortunate generation” who have enjoyed dramatic improvements in living standards but are now “absorbing” more than their fair share of taxpayers’ money, one the most senior clerics in the Church of England has suggested.

Rev Chartres believes boomers have plundered the country's wealth and not put back in
In contrast to the bishop’s views, a study by the Centre for Economic and Business Research, commissioned by Saga [a company that makes money out of the over 65's insatiable demand for all inclusive bowling holidays in country manors], concluded that over-65s are aiding economic recovery [they're probably aiding Saga's recovery anyway].

Go on then. Tell us which of the regular contributors to the forum you expect to bash the bishop."When the people fear the government there is tyranny, when the government fears the people there is liberty." - Thomas Jefferson0 -
From the linked article;
He said we are living through a period in which the Government’s financial clout remains “massive”, with public spending rising from around £26 billion in 1997 to nearly £695 billion last year.
On that basis I believe we can see why Richard Chartres sought a career in the church rather than something that demanded some kind of mathematical ability.:)0 -

Considering the harmful social effects of too-high house prices, I would say this was well within his brief as a bishop.
Just as most people have turned away from religion, many are now turning against the idea of rampant HPI as a good thing.
So stop bashing your bishop and wake up to reality.0 -
I agree with the bishop. And bashing.0

Whenever I see senior members of the CoE attacking the government for trying to control spending I can only think of the huge hypocrisy given the obscene amount of land and other assets they control.
I wish the next time they do it that the government would offer to provide 2/3rds of the funding if the church provides the rest.
This chap however seems to be saying what isn't popular but needs saying and thus has my respect.Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...0 -
I live in a classic well off SE rural area and I can assure the Bish that his club owns a very large and expensive detached property in just about every village here.
Why doesn't he downsize the clergy into modest 3 bed terraced homes and use the billions in released equity in good causes?
As ever, utter hypocrisy from the do - good camp, the very same we get from multi millionaire lefties applauded by mindless clapping monkeys on BBC Question Time without once ever pausing to consider why it is these lefty millionaires do not volunteer a lot more tax and put money were mouth is.0 -
