Best Diet for Insulin Resistance

Have been through a tough few years, which, amongst other things, has resulted in a 6 stone weight gain in about 8 years, in my 40s. Have never been really overweight before, never skinny, just a normal healthy weight. I struggle to lose on ww and slimming world, and have searched and come to the conclusion I am insulin resistant.

I have put on around my mid section, when used to have a classic pear shape, have skin tags and excessive facial hair growth- gross I know, but am determined to sort myself out and get myself a life.

I am confused as to which approach is best. I understand carbs need to be got rid of, but would low-carb aka Atkins, Idiot Proof diet be necessary, or would paleo type eating work, as then could incorporate green juices.

Any other suggestions would be most appreciated, as would other people's experience of losing weight with insulin resistance.:)

Thanks in advance x

Ah don't be disheartened. It must just be quiet on here because there are usually lots of helpful people. Most people say go for low carb.

I have PCOS so insulin resistance too. Have u been checked for PCOS?

I have a of the symptoms you describe, excess hair, weight around the middle (as well as all over lol), acne and skin tags.

I wish I could tell you what to do re: diet. I have tried many things and have yet to lose substantial weight without resorting to vclds (and i only put it back on after). I have however, had fantastic advice from everyone on here with help for binge or overeating. Low carb has helped immensely with this.

    Hi SS

Not a daft question at all. I have been overweight now for quite a few years and tried them all ss, ww, tablets without any luck the weight loss is so slow but I only have to look at a glass of wine of slice of bread and all hard work undone. On sw I usually stay the same or lose 1/2 only to put it back on the next week, I think either I am like you IR or have completely messed up my metabolism. (Sorry long answer - what I wanted to say is) I am now trying the 5.2 (thread on mse) which may be able to sort out your messed up metabolism and there does seem to be some good results on there. Have a read of the thread (I love it) and see what you think. Sorry I do go on a bit
  • Slimming Susan , I could have written your post myself- I was exactly the same , couldn't lose a pound at SW or WW ,carried weight around my middle. I only found out a year ago I was Insulin Resistant after I had a mini stroke and had loads of bloods and tests done. I have found it very hard to get weight off . I have cut out all white bread, rice and all pasta. I have read a few books . Are skin tags a symptom of IR ? I have some but didn't know that ? Google and there are some forums that should be helpful. I may try the 5-2 diet myself. Also juicing is good also - carrot juice is lovely as is beet root and apple juice. I will keep watching here for any advise .I forgot to say - get your cholesterol checked - mine was very high. I'm now on statins .

Have you actually seen a doctor about any of this? Self-diagnosis is a bad idea!

Low-carb is a pretty good idea, maybe do what I did to begin with and cut out bread and pasta, the only carbs I really eat now are brown rice and a bit of potato - nothing refined.

    Do you exercise?

    Hi op

I am exactly the same I have PCOS and on metformin for insulin resistance.

I have seen I dietician in the hospital who said low GI is the best for pcos.

I am no doing weight watchers (I need structure) but with a Low Gi twist... Ie I have a points allowance but use my points by choosing lower gi options eg new potatoes instead mash potatoes, oats instead of wheat etc...

    Hope that helps

I recommend giving up sugar, all processed carbs and wheat.
Giving up sugar is incredibly hard, especially to start, but it really made me feel much, much better after a month or two.
