I'll be really interested to see if J's budget series has ways of retaining the eco and ethical ingredients he favours. I know that if you look at meat as an occasional luxury and grow organic veggies yourself it helps with maintaining standards of animal welfare, soil enrichment and wildlife preservation, but I'll be interested to see if and how he tackles these aspects of food provision in his programmes

Just swap the mince for lentils. See, saving you money already ;)

They're in there too , or rather porridge oats, so I can eek out the mince but I see your point ;)

I expect every recipe will have garlic in it (yuk).

I'm surprised they haven't started putting it in puddings yet.

but as soon as he says the word "bruvva" i'm turning over!:D

i think us here on MSE have expectations of a programme that WE can learn from, but in fact progs like this and superscrimpers etc are aimed at those spending MUCH more than we usually do

I hate his recipes.. but I don't like chillis or salmon or olive oil or most of the rest of the food he wants us to spend a fortune on.

    Apparently I'm pickier than a 3 y/o lol

It would be much better if they invaded your kitchen and used what people had in and actually buy! That would be much more useful ad achievable than expecting people to change the things they buy.. unless of course their cupboards are full of crap.

I'd quite like something more interesting for my pork steaks please!

Do they do budget brand balsamic vinegar?
If you fold it in half, will an Audi A4 fit in a Citroen C5? :)

Try Aldis. Cheap enough in there. Likewise olive oil, parmesan, olives and other ingredients.

    If not Aldi than Lidl.

Both stores are very good for a better quality of low priced items - less water in the wafer thin ham etc and good prices for store cupboard items.

If you have ethnic shops in your area then check them out for olive oil, spices, yoghurt etc

B&M and Home Bargains sell good quality balsamic vinegar for cheap.
Just look on the back of the bottle, if it says Modena then its the real vinegar. Apparently Modena is where it is traditionally brewed and is the best quality.

I'll look forward to watching it as i have gained a lot of good ideas from his recipes.
I have to admit he does tend to add a lot of really expensive items to his recipes. But i just substitute these and generally just use vegetable oil instead, its healthier and contains omega 3.
