Long term Cat boarding

Hi, I'm hoping someone here can help. I'm off travelling for a year and looking for someone to board my cat in their home while I'm away. I'm happy to pay them for this- like a £ a day plus pay for all food, vets etc. Do you know where i can advertise a "job" like that. I don't have family or friends who are able to look after her and long term catteries just seem to expensive and sad. And I cant face giving her away! Maybe gumtree?

Any advice would be great. Thanks.

Do you use Facebook? We have a local pets page which I would use in your circumstance, worth a try.

I would speak to your local cat sanctuarys and ask their advice. They may have people who foster cats for them who they could recommend.

I would be very wary about advertising this on gumtree etc you need to make sure you find someone who will love your cat as you do and not someone who just sees it as easy money.

How about looking for a fostering service or a farm willing to take on cats? I know some places do this for dogs.

A £-a-day? Not much recompense for sorting out your problem and changing their whole life for a year! Plus, they would, if cat lovers, get pretty attached to your cat.

I gave my cat to a friend to look after in difficult times. After a period of time, I rang him up and said I was ready to take my cat back. I could hear the children crying in the background! I let him stay in his new home.

Maybe you have to choose between your travel or your cat? As long as your cat is in a loving home...?

    I'm guessing you're in your 20's?
  • You could ask at your local vet. I know someone who's a veterinary nurse and she also looks after other people's pets in her home. Or they might know someone who could.

I'd also second NOT generally advertising; you've no idea who will turn up and what they will do with your cat. Ask around, ask friends to ask their friends; talk to neighbours; people at work; etc. You'll find someone.

BUT, at the end of the day, if none of that works out, you may have to face rehoming her. We had to do this with a dog - years ago - when we were between homes and had to rent (no dogs allowed) for longer than expected. The dog was fine - we were heartbroken.

That's one of the really tough things about having a pet - sometimes you have to do what's right for them and not necessarily what's right for you. I guess it's called love.

Have you actually thought this through ?

As VanMan says a cat lover will probably get really attached to the cat ..... and visa versa ...

At the end of the day ...a year is a pretty long time .... ( obviously it would be different if it was just for a couple of weeks ) ...

To be honest i really don't think that you have thought this through properly .
