claiming benefits and selling on ebay

I am on income support and disability living allowance permanently and im thinking about making and selling on ebay.

i have a few questions and would very much appreciate any help/info

1. do i need to tell the DWP? i don't know how much i will sell from week to week i.e i may only earn £10 one week and then £100 the next, so have no idea of income/earnings on a week to week basis or even monthly.

2. will i lose my benefits?

3. do i have to tell the tax people? to my understanding you can earn £8,000 odd before being taxed.

thanks :)

I'll leave the benefit experts to answer the benefits question, but for the HMRC one you will need to register and prepare annual accounts. We all have personal allowances but those are used against all income, and that includes any taxable benefits , saving interest, pensions etc.

Each year you will need to complete a tax return, but if your taxable income is less than your allowances there will be no tax to pay.

If someone is earning from a business, regardless of whether it is under the £8,000 limit, they must inform the taxman as a fine, albeit not very often, may be imposed if caught 'forgetting' to tell them.

You would lose benefits, if you were earning the required amount for you to no longer be under whatever the 'means tested' threshold is for income support. Why would anyone believe they can earn benefits AND have a sideline job without losing out? Benefits are designed by the state to be the lowest amount to live on, whether comfortably or not is another matter. I'm not saying you assume this, but people do.

The benefits people must be informed of any business, which making and selling would be, as if you were caught doing so you may lose your benefits and be convicted of fraud. Seems they like to make an example of people lately.
