Northern Rock's so called "bad bank", containing the worst of the worst of those 100% plus mortgages, has made over a billion pounds in profit in the last 2 years alone.

And they were just the first to be bailed out...

Aye, but as with all the others, it wasn't their UK mortgage lending standards, nor the default rate on UK mortgages, that caused them to need a bail-out.

So why did they embark upon a programme of UK mortgage repossessions, as chronicled in other forums on MSE?

Well in a recession you'll find that more mortgages don't get paid as more people lose their jobs. And if mortgages aren't paid, and there is no realistic prospect of them being caught up, then eventually houses will get repossessed.

However the number of unpaid UK residential mortgages was not sufficiently large to result in the downfall of the banks, nor cause them to need bailing out.

UK residential mortgage lending standards had absolutely nothing to do with the collapse of the global financial system, and it was not the performance of their residential mortgage lending books that required UK banks to need bailouts.

I mean, this is not even a subject where there is the slightest doubt, or room for debate.

It's absolutely known by the banks, the regulators, the BOE, the government..... everybody.

UK residential mortgage lending standards did not bring down the UK banks. It's as simple as that.

I am curious.... Where did you get this idea from?

It's a total fallacy, yet surprisingly, commonly believed.

doesn't change the fact that a bunch of visitors to the rightmove website said that they liked it (so another misleading thread title to add to your collection). I wonder how the questions were asked...

The impacts of the scheme, for good or bad, won't be understood for years.

For now though it's bound to be popular. It's giving people the chance to buy a house and their parents will also be breathing a sigh of relief.

Popular, and indeed relatively harmless, as it wasn't UK mortgage lending standards that brought down the UK banks.

Begs the question why such wonderful offerings are no longer available?

Hamish, why do you insist on spinning everything to the absolute extreme?

Surely if you felt your point was valid, you could put it across without having to change the words and therefore the validity.

You stated "overwhelming popular with voters". Why? Why not just state what it is? That is, 72% of potential buyers replying to a rightmove poll.

Not voters at all. By doing this, you've not only lost any validity of the point, but you have also managed to put the focus back on to your rather pathetic spin in every one of your posts.
