Is there anything illegal about bait and switch?

I see my company is at it again, they advertised for workers in the local paper and job centre, while they did start quite a few people they all left which doesn't surprise me, some not even lasting the day, so I see they have now resorted to the same old tactic that snared me, they've got an agency to put up a fancy advert with the old 35 hours per week, high rate of pay to get the applications in, they'll start someone the poor soul will then find out they've been had, they can either leave and face a JSA sancation or suck it up which is what I did.
Is this legal? It's kind of like false advertising I guess, Or is this type of thing common practice? Surly the solution would be to treat people a bit better and not have to resort to these underhand tactics?

I'm sorry you will need to elaborate a little bit..how are they advertising falsely ?
Surely you knew the pay rate before accepting the job?
It would be highly unusual to offer you one rate and then reduce it immediately you started, which is what I think you might be saying but I am not sure?0 -

Anyone new that starts seems to have been unemployed previously, I know I was, in my case it was was advertised £8.50 per hour, 35 hours per week, you go for the interview you get told the job has gone or there was an error by the agency but get offered this other job on the spot, min wage. You either accept it or decline it and face the possibility they might report you for turning down a job which I bet they would do as they operate a work scheme where the government pays them a grant for taking someone of the dole.0 -
What a stupid short termism HR model, that will always end up costing them more as even if someone accepts the role, they will have an eye on the door.0

Maybe underhand and disappointing, but surely if you are unemployed then a job, even on minimum wage, is better than no job. And it doesn't stop you from keeping looking for something better.0

True, but then you have a workforce who's main aim is to get out which is what its like, we discuss local jobs listed etc and there is genuine happiness should one of us manage to get out.0 -
Answer: No, there isn't.0

The answer back to the Job Centre is that the employer never offered what was advertised.
The reason doesn't matter.0 -
Yes but the employers answer would be that they did offer another position and if you have been unemployed for a while (can't remember the exact number of weeks) you would be forced to accept any minimum wage job.
Even if you haven't been unemployed for long enough I would not be in the least surprised if the Job Centre still sanction you.
You would then have to appeal and would probably win but you would not get JSA during this time.

My thoughts exactly, the entire thing is designed to trap people, very sneaky. You also won't find out about the hidden overtime clause until you refuse to do it.0
