Steak canadians or minute steaks

  • I recently collected a load (a van load that is) of steak canadiannes (modern spelling) from the company that makes them near Clitheroe in Lancashire. The man who invented them is running a (much smaller than in the 1970s and 80s) operation manufacturing them and explained a few things to me. He has registered seven variant spellings of the name 'steak canadiann' which really does have something to do with Canada... it was when he was on vacation with his wife Ann in Canada that the name came to him in the early 1970s (I think).

They are made from real rump steak but it has been processed a little, presumably just to tenderize itand allow them to be sliced very thinly whilst frozen. I watched as they packed them and they look a perfectly good thin slice of beef. Why should thinly sliced pig meat (i.e. bacon) have the monopoly on hot meat sandwiches anyway? The idea of a thin, hot slice of beef in a sandwich with a little salad and raw onion reminds me of the late 70s when I was drinking beer and having a steak canadienne (as it was then called) in my local pub - delicious!

Herons have started selling these again.
  • As a Canadian, I have to ask. What is Steak Canadian? Maple syrup coated and wrapped in Canadian Bacon???

I was wondering the same thing!

I grew up in Canada and we had minute steak at home but it was a piece of beef steak that was beaten with a mallet to thin it out and tenderise it so it cooked quickly (kind of like making schnitzel but minus the bread crumbs). I'd never heard of such a thing being referred to as 'steak canadiann' or of it being mass produced and sold frozen. The description of the product on this thread doesn't sound much like anything we ate back home!
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

i remember these used to have them as a kid, very unhealthy but tasted lovely, Weedsy they are not thin slices of steak, they were chopped up beef and other meats spat out of a machine
  • I bought some minute steaks from Macro over the weekend. They are good, but not steak canadiennes.

    These might be though

Have a look on the marfast website (in the uk) for steak canadienne

(Sorry can't put a link in)
