Unfortunately they are not just "perceived" rights but actual ones.
You can still be hacked off about it though.

If you have completed 8 years' service then you would at least be due 8 weeks' notice.

I didn't mean to offend, I was simply stating the truth in black and white. Ofc you can be !!!!ed of but you need to know what your rights are so you can move forward.

I admit I was alittle ****ed with you..that someone had already said what I have just repeated but in a nicer way..yet you still were asking the same question(or trying to find away around it) so I put it to you in a more formal way hoping you would see sense.

Its not fair, but you need to know what they are allowed to do and what they aren't. In this case it works out that they can complety screw you over and thiers nothing you can do....and getting angry with me saying that doesn't change the fact they can. I thought I was being helpful as I was only answaring what you came on here to ask....but obvouisly you only wanted to hear the good news and not the bad news. I live in the real world where bad things happen...sorry to bring you down to my level.

Not sure what you mean about potential of a union-theres no union where I work and never will be-if there was I'd have gone to them already-can you please elaborate-thanks

You have the right to join a union - your work can't stop you, but do not need to provide information to help you join.

I wonder if there are other shifts which might be acceptable to both you and your employer? I am thinking about night shifts or moving yours earlier rather than later.

    Hi reynardthe

Perhaps ACAS could offer you guidance in this matter. As a parent and a carer, you are allowed to ask your employer for flexible working hours to work around your family life. Of course, your employer can refuse, but the leaflet in the following link might be useful to you:

Your contract specifically states they can change your hours so if you decided you didn't want/couldn't do the new hours there would be nothing you can do about it. You signed the contract agreeing to working different hours when necessary. Unfortunately most contracts have these clauses these days.

Wait and see if your letter was fruitful, I'm sure if they can accommodate you they will, having worked there for so long they would appreciate your loyalty.
