Mechanical scales v digital

I am not a serious dieter but would like to just lose a few pounds now that I have started at the gym . I bought new digital scales to replace my old mechanical ones . I took them back as faulty as they gave a reading more than 6 lb more than the mechanical ones . I tried a different set and have weighed myself several times (same time of day) . The reading changes a lot by several lbs from day to day . In comparison my old scales and the scales at the gym agree with each other and give a much lower reading (about what I would expect )
Has anyone else had this with digital scales ?

We always trust the ones showing the lower weight ;-)..

Unless you try weighing something with a 'guaranteed weight' - say dumbells & sugar its hard to know which is right and wrong..

The key is often to stick to the same scales \ position \ time of day and similar clothing.. since gains\losses..

If your using the gym - use a tape measure to track where the inches are going.. that can be a more rewarding measure to go with.. those measurements cant be wrong..

The only problems I've had with digital scales is when the battery is on it's way out, personally I prefer digital as they I feel they give a more accurate reading and you can see exactly if you're losing, even if it's just by half a pound.

Maybe your weight fluctuates a lot because of water retention?

I would always recommend taking measurements also, this helps keep you motivated even when the scales are being 'stubborn' :)

All scales lie - they are evil :rotfl:
  • Use how your clothes fit as a better way of determining weight loss, or your measurements.

Yes, clothes fit is a good way of monitoring weight loss and to see how your body is responding
