The banks should have had better business sense - no other business sector would have qualified for unlimited bailout.

Free enterprise for you. Like leaving Wiinnie with the honey pot - just gorge themselves silly. Of course we can't kill Winnie because the next generation are dependant on him.

Shame the government and the FSA weren't doing the same. Ordinary punters couldn't have stopped the crash. The government in power at the time could have

The government of the day were just using a convenient wheeze to kick the can down the road. One of many such wheezes used for decades to keep the lights on a little longer rather than sort out the generator.

In 30/40 years the country has become a debt junkie. Instead of just a few spendthrifts the governments as supplier now have most people addicted.

Unfortunately for them there is a hardcore that refuse to be converted although they are trying every trick in the book to make it happen.

Quite right, I doubt anyone has ever gone into an election saying 'The economy's doing ok, we're going to cut spending and cut public sector jobs'.

That's why Keynesianism will never work, no one will ever vote for it.

Just as no one has won an election by saying we are going to increase tax. The fact remains that before financial crisis George was quite happy to match Labours spending itwas only after that he changed his mind.

the deficit in 2006/7 just before the financial crash was about the same as in 1997 when the conservatives fell from power

Do you have figures to back this up

It's my understanding that the Tories ran a balanced budget, whereas Labour did not

    Your ignorance is breathtaking.

The facts have been shown on this site hundreds of times.

In any event the figures are easy to find on the internet as the government publishes them freely.

However UKcarper has given you a link so you can see the figures over the years.

How much of the debt was caused by domestic spending? How much caused by bailing out a failed capitalist system and the banks? in 2009, £134 billion pounds had been spent bailing out banks. Because the banks failed us, our welfare bills have increased due to a recession that was international in the making and international in it's effect. No matter who had been in power in 2008 the situation would have been much the same because all political parties shared roughly the same attitudes towards the financial sector up until they had the benefit of hindsight.

The current government are faring no better than the previous one - they are making an absolute mess of the country's finances and all they have to offer is failure after failure with the most vulnerable suffering the most.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.
