Mortgage repossession Shortfall advice

I have several questions about an expected shortfall after repossession. The property was jointly owned by myself and my ex, I left the property in August last year with an agreement between us to market the property after Christmas. There had been issues with mortgage repayments previously as my ex was/is a compulsive gambler and these seemed to have been sorted by my ex and NRAM. In early January this year I received a call from NRam asking me for a payment as my ex had failed to pay the mortgage. I was also informed that he had therefore broken a suspended court order agreement and that unless all the arrears could be paid we would have to repossess either voluntarily or through the courts.
I was not aware of a court order, I'd received a letter detailing the agreed payment plan between my ex and NRAM but there was no mention of a court order on it and there was no other correspondence dealing with this either... I was also (foolishly) naive to the fact the ex had once again stopped paying. Had I have been aware I would have started marketing the property ASAP but when I found out they told me I would not be allowed too.
The house was voluntarily repossessed in March and currently there is a notice of an offer on the property for £16k less than what we owe. I am currently in a position where I will not be able to afford to make repayments, I rent privately but receive some housing benefit + other benefits and a small employment income. I'm just about keeping myself going as it is! My ex's gambling has since got worse to the point that he has a sick certificate from work and several thousand pounds worth of debt.
I want to know what steps I should take next regarding the shortfall when the final bill comes in? I would also like to be made financially independent of my ex, would NRAM split the debt between us? How else can I do this? As a result of trying o deal with the effects of the gambling/moving away etc I have a few credit card debts/overdrafts owing....
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer
