I've been in my current job for almost a year and whilst I don't love it, it's ok and it's not stressful and fairly easy to do.
Bit of background: I applied for the higher level job - let's call it Tier 1 - person doing the tier 2 job also applied. Person doing tier 2 job got the tier 1 job and I got tier 2. Within a few weeks of starting, I found myself quite relieved to have not got tier 1 as I realised there was a fair bit of hassle/stress for basically only £2k a year more.
Fast forward to now and person doing tier 1 has resigned so that job now open. I was asked by my line manager today why I hadn't applied, they are interviewing very soon. My response was that as they had spoken to someone last week, I had assumed it was a done deal and that I wasn't sure if I wanted the job, but added that I thought I could do it.
I've been advised to sleep on it and they would happily slot me in for an interview. The future prospects and plans were also outlined. There would be more responsibility and possibly travel within 2 hours of home on a not too frequent basis but possibly longer hours.
I don't know whether to apply or not. If I got it, I'm really not sure I want the hassle etc, but if I don't, I could be working alongside someone who isn't nice and be seen as someone who doesn't want to get on. Also, I think I would find it a bit humiliating to be turned down for the same job twice.
I did struggle a bit for the first few months but feel that I've really settled in well since Xmas but I'm just not sure.
Any thoughts would be most welcome, thanks.

I wouldn't let failing twice stop me from applying for the same job (that's how I got mine!). Anyway you are in a more favourable position as an internal candidate otherwise they would not have nudged you. I think what you need is more of a cash incentive to take on the extra roles and responsibilities. I would probably ask them if they could move on pay -maybe you will feel more motivated then. After all an extra 2k gross is not a lot after tax.0
